How I built it
Lebese: a milk fat SNF rate calculator that shows every step
A milk fat SNF rate calculator is only useful if you can follow its arithmetic. Lebese reads a dairy delivery slip, applies the dairy’s own cited rate rule, shows each step from fat and SNF to the final amount, and checks the month’s statement line by line.

01
The problem: a few small numbers decide the payment
A family with two cows sells milk to a collection center twice a day. Each time they get a small paper slip: liters, fat, SNF and an amount. The amount comes from the dairy’s rate rule, which can change by date, add an incentive, take a deduction and round at a certain step.
Hundreds of slips later, the monthly statement arrives. Most families add a few totals by hand or simply accept it. The apps I found for this work are built for the collection center, not for the family holding the slips.
02
The plan: the family’s side, and only cited rules
Lebese is for the household, never the center. It works from a rule that names its source: a small catalog of three published rules, each with its region, start date and link, or a rule the family enters from their own dairy’s paper.
If a rule does not cover a date, or a published chart has no price for that exact fat and SNF pair, Lebese says so. It never fills a gap in a chart with a guess.
03
The build: photo, check, then trust
AI coding agents built Lebese from my written specification. You photograph a slip and text recognition on the phone suggests the liters, fat, SNF and amount. Nothing is saved until you confirm each value, and you can always type the numbers instead.
Then the app shows the arithmetic, line by line: total solids, the solids value, the per-liter incentive, the delivery total. In the store picture above, that gives 228.46 while the slip says 228.34. The app shows the gap and leaves the judgment to you.
04
The month, and patterns without accusations
At the month’s end Lebese matches each statement line to a confirmed delivery: first by date and morning or evening, then by a unique date-and-liters pair. Lines that do not match stay on screen. It compares four totals: expected, the statement lines, the printed total and the money received.
With enough records it checks a small planned set of patterns, such as a lasting change in fat readings or a gap between morning and evening. A statistical correction keeps false alarms for the whole set at 5% or less. The words it uses describe the numbers, never a cause or a person.
05
What was tested, and what was not
17 unit tests passed, with hand-worked cases: 5 liters at 6.0% fat under a fat-only rule came out at exactly 200.00, and the same rule in June and July versions gave the right month’s price. The slip reader read 12 computer-drawn slips on a tablet and got all 48 fields right. The pattern checks caught all 100 planted changes and raised no alarm on 200 clean series.
The missing proof matters. The camera test on a real paper slip could not be scored: the test phone’s camera showed a black preview. Faded thermal paper, glare or torn slips may force you to type the values. No record shows a dairy family using the app yet.

Where it stands
Lebese: Check Milk Slips is live on Google Play. It checks arithmetic and patterns in the numbers you confirm. It does not test milk, decide whether a reading is right, prove anything legally or say what a fair price is.
What this shows about how I work
- A number on screen should come with the steps that made it.
- When a rule has a gap, refusing is more honest than guessing.
- Tests on drawn slips are not tests on real paper; I say which is which.
How to work out a milk rate from fat and SNF, by hand
You do not need a milk fat SNF rate calculator for one slip. You need your dairy’s rule, the slip’s numbers and a few lines of arithmetic.
- Find your dairy’s rule, in writing. Rules differ between dairies and change over time. One public example is the Nagarkurnool district dairy page in Telangana, India: “Rs.600 per Kg Fat for Buffalo Milk and Rs.240 Per Kg Total Solids for Cow milk and Rs.4/- per Litter milk incentive”.
- Read the slip. Write down the liters, the fat percentage and the SNF percentage (solids-not-fat), and the amount printed.
- Fat-only rule. Multiply the fat percentage by the price per kg of fat and divide by 100. That is the value per liter. Add any per-liter incentive. Example: 6.0 × 600 ÷ 100 = 36, plus 4 = 40 per liter; 5 liters = 200.
- Total-solids rule. Add fat and SNF first, then do the same. Example: 4.0% fat + 8.5% SNF = 12.5%; 12.5 × 240 ÷ 100 = 30, plus 4 = 34 per liter.
- Rate chart instead of a formula. Some dairies publish a chart with a price for each fat and SNF pair. Look up the exact pair. If your pair is not in the chart, ask the dairy; do not guess from the nearest row.
- Check the rounding and the dates. A small difference can come from where the dairy rounds, or from a new rule that started mid-month. Compare with the rule that was in force on the slip’s date before you decide anything is wrong.
These examples treat one liter as the unit the rule prices, the way that page states its incentive. If your dairy weighs milk in kilograms, use its own wording.
Lebese helps by doing these steps for every slip, showing each line of the arithmetic, and checking the month’s statement against them.
