Jawi Brunei: convert Rumi to Jawi, then check the spelling

To convert Rumi to Jawi, Jawi Brunei takes Malay typed in Latin letters and produces Jawi text. It gives you something to review, copy, share or save, with a reminder to verify the spelling before official use.

Selamat datangسلامت داتڠ

Both words are in the app's bundled word list. This example shows its output; it is not an independent spelling check.

How to convert Rumi to Jawi with a spelling reference

For a short phrase, look up the words individually. Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malaysia gives these reference routes through its PRPM language-advice page:

  1. Check a word in PRPM. Open Pusat Rujukan Persuratan Melayu and search for the Malay word you want to write. DBP says Jawi spellings can be checked there.
  2. Use the named spelling reference. DBP recommends Daftar Kata Bahasa Melayu Rumi-Sebutan-Jawi Edisi Kedua. It says the online Daftar Rumi-Jawi (Beta) is a digital copy of that book, but warns that errors may have occurred when the entries were transferred.
  3. Ask about a missing word. If PRPM does not have it, DBP directs readers to Khidmat Nasihat DBP, its language-advice service. Do not treat a missing entry as confirmation of an automatic result.

How the app helps: Jawi Brunei generates a draft from your Rumi text and keeps copy, share and save controls beside the result.

A word list before letter rules

The converter first looks for a whole word in its bundled list. If it finds one, it uses that stored spelling. For a word outside the list, it works through grouped letters such as ng and ny, then consonants and vowels.

This is a rule-based writing tool. It does not translate an English sentence into Malay or use the sentence's meaning to choose a spelling.

  2. 02

    Where automatic conversion falls short

For an unlisted word, the fallback always leaves out a medial e: it has no way to ask which e sound you mean. A whole-word entry can supply a spelling that those general rules cannot.

The reverse direction also checks the word list first, then uses fixed letter mappings. For example, the forward fallback changes a final k to qaf, while the reverse table maps qaf to q. Converting out and back therefore need not recover the original Rumi.

  3. 03

Is a Jawi alphabet A to Z enough?

The app's own converter shows why a single-letter chart is not enough: it also needs grouped letters and stored whole-word spellings. Its Learn screen provides letter names, sounds and examples. The Write screen lets you draw over a faint letter; it does not grade your handwriting.

If you want a Jawi alphabet converter, distinguish practicing a letter from checking a whole word. The app offers both activities, but its learning examples use the same converter, so they are not an independent check of its output.

  4. 04

What the tests can tell us

The app's unit-test source contains checks for selected word-list entries, letter rules, punctuation and reverse conversion. Those checks specify what the code is expected to return; they do not establish that arbitrary Malay text is spelled correctly.

What was not checked: I found no evidence in the app's records that a Jawi teacher or native reader checked its output. I did not rerun the app tests or test it on a device for this page.

Use it with that boundary in mind

Jawi Brunei is an independent educational app. It is not affiliated with the Government of Brunei Darussalam or Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Brunei. Check important spellings with an authoritative reference before putting them in an official document.

Talk about the build

A useful tool should explain its limits.
